Qld women win national title
The Queensland Women's side are the new national champions after winning a tightly contested final against Sydney at the Australian titles on the Gold Coast.
Having lost to Sydney in the past two finals - last year by a single point - the Queensland women turned the tables in today's final to win 15-13.
Hooker Teresa Noble and Wallaroo fullback Tricia Brown each scored tries, with flanker Lavinia Gould adding a conversion and penalty.
Brown was later named Player of the Tournament, while Vanessa Bradley was voted by her teammates as Queensland's player of the tournament.
“The victory was very sweet. Today, they did it for everyone back in Queensland,” coach Shirley Russell said.
“The girls have been very committed to the job since the announcement of the original squad. Women’s rugby has certainly progressed.”
Brown (University), Iliseva Batibasaga (Brothers), Shannon Parry (Easts), Cheyenne Campbell (Easts) and Se’ei Sa’a (Wests) were later named in the Wallaroo squad to play the Oceania qualifier in Samoa in August.
