Queensland Premier Rugby preview Rd 16

Souths v Uni the match of the round
Friday, 30 July 2010

With seven teams still in the hunt for a top four spot in Queensland Premier Rugby and just three games to go, tomorrow’s Round 16 matches will be crucial.

The match of the round will be at Chipsy Wood Oval, where third placed Souths host competition front runners University.

The students (65 points) have not lost a game since the opening round and their top four spot is already sewn up, but a bonus point win against the ambitious Magpies at home would give them a firm grip on the Horsley Cup as probable minor premiers.

Souths (47 points) look safe for a top four spot but could use the reassurance that a confidence boosting win over University would provide. Souths will also be challenging Uni for The Caxton Cup, which Uni has succesfully defended for the past two rounds.

Another key game will be the 4.30 match between second placed Sunnybank (56) and fifth placed Sunshine Coast (41) at the Dragons' Oldmac Oval.

A bonus point win for Sunnybank will virtually wrap up a top two spot, while Toutai Kefu's Stingrays are playing well enough to qualify for their first ever semi-final appearance, provided they can shake off their away game bogey.

In other games: the struggling Norths (26) host the fourth placed defending premiers Brothers (42) in a must-win game for the Brethren; last placed Wests (16) host Easts (37) and GPS (also 37) will again roll the dice on their late semi-final bid when they host the Gold Coast Breakers (30).
