University continued their winning form, defeating GPS 37-14 in a dominant performance at Ashgrove Sports Ground on the home club's traditional Ladies Day.
A crowd of more than 1500 turned out for the annual event but the home side struggled to impress against University’s strong defence.
University drew first blood in the opening minutes after a charge down try from prop Heath Tessman and maintained intensity and possession for the majority of the first half.
With GPS defence tiring, repeated penalties led to a Yellow Card for flanker Ray Stowers and University took full advantage of having the extra man.
The second half was more closely fought with GPS taking advantage of a penalty and winger Byron Roberts scoring.
But GPS failed to go on with it and try doubles to Tessman and David Burns sealed the Students’ victory.
University coach Mick Heenan was pleased with the performance ahead of next week's tough assignment of Easts on home turf.
“We’re really happy with the way we defended for most of the game,” Heenan said.
Although University claimed a four try bonus point Heenan lamented lost chances in the second half that could have improved their for-and-against.
“We butchered a few tries in the second half but fortunately we did enough in the first half to put enough distance between us and GPS,” Heenan said.
GPS coach Matt Pini conceded his team has a lot to work on after two losses in successive weeks.
“University are very well drilled and outplayed us in every facet of the game,” Pini said.
QR Reds hooker and Uni captain James Hanson, Tessman and Mitchell Wade continued to impress and were valiant contributors to University’s win.
An injury depleted GPS face Sunnybank away next week.
