Chiefs v QR Reds

QR Reds
18 Round 04 23

The QR Reds came back from 15-0 down to post a courageous 23-18 win over the previously unbeaten Chiefs in their Investec Bank Super 14 match in Hamilton, New Zealand.

The Reds conceded three tries in 20 minutes but again showed grit and determination to fight their way back into the game.

A sweet pop pass by Quade Cooper gave wing Will Chambers - making his run-on debut - the first and easiest Super 14 try he will ever score, while new fullback Luke Morahan showed his speed and style with a try under the posts from an opportunistic kick through by Daniel Braid.

Morahan said when he saw the ball kicked deep he thought: "gee there's not a chance it'd take off here, so I just put my head down and ran", a decision that paid dividends.

Former All Black Braid had another non-stop game for his adopted team, while Cooper got the side into the game with his goal kicking, claiming five from six.

Braid came up against his younger brother Luke in the second half and said he gave him a "little clip" in one scrum before heading off to resume his role of tackling the Chiefs into submission.

The Reds had been forced to make five squad changes before the match due to injury, but after sorting out their early defensive lapses they stuck to a winning game plan of keeping the ball away from the Chiefs and forcing their opponents into error with strangling defence.

"We really dug deep and it was an outstanding effort," said captain Will Genia after another world class effort from the scrumhalf.

"Attitude was something we really wanted to change (in our team) and that's shone through with our performance.

"A lot of people questioned our depth but our young guys really stood up."

It was Queensland's first victory over the Waikato-based Chiefs since 2005.

Reds wing Brando Va'aulu received a yellow card for a dangerous first half tackle on Sitiveni Sivivatu but the 14-man Reds still outscored the Chiefs 6-3 to close the gap to 18-13 at halftime.

QR Reds 23 (Will Chambers, Luke Morahan tries Quade Cooper 2 cons 3 pens) def Chiefs 18 (Lelia Masaga, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Arizona Taumalolo tries Stephen Donald pen) at Waikato Stadium.
