Qld Country U20 win two from two

Friday, 18 July 2008

The QR Queensland Country Under 20's have made it two wins from two matches at the WA U20 carnival in Perth, beating the host side 16-3.

This followed a 15-10 win over Victoria in the opening match of the tournament.

The outstanding performance was built on the back of sensational Country defence that repelled wave after wave of attack from the classy Western Australian outfit.

After being first to post points through the boot of the Gold Coast's Andy Hollis, Country spent the bulk of the first half camped on their own line but refused to give way.

The only try of the match came late in the first half as Country finally started to gain some field position.

Fly half Lachlan Jenson from the Darling Downs cut through the WA defensive line to set up flying Gold Coast winger Joel Sykes who crossed out wide.

Poor discipline from the Western Australian side allowed Hollis to extend Country's lead, with the fullback finishing the match with three penalty goals and one conversion - and his team's vote as the players' player for the match.

Queensland Country coaches Heath Claydon, Mark Moxon and Terry Shiells were delighted with the outcome.

"The attitude, commitment and at times desperation of the players was some of the best I have seen," said Moxon.

The QR Queensland Country U20’s play their last match against a WA Barbarians side that is expected to be a tough and physical encounter.
