St Leo's wins inaugural Francis and Kassulke Cup

Tuesday, 23 September 2008

St Leo’s College defeated King’s College 26-17 to claim the inaugural Francis and Kassulke Cup at University on the weekend.

Although the annual grudge match has been played since 1920 no trophy has been previously awarded.

The new trophy donated by a King’s Old Collegian was named after the first Wallaby for King’s, Eric Francis (1914) and Leo’s Nigel Kassulke who played for the Wallabies in 1985.

Before a 1200-plus crowd, King’s dominated the first half with their star fullback and recent QR Reds touring member to Ireland, Luke Morahan scoring out wide, the try converted by fellow Reds tourist Jono Lance.

Kings lost Lance with a blow to the head but went to the break with a 10-nil lead thanks to a Mitch Hogan penalty just before halftime.

St Leo’s came out of the sheds a different side, with Chris Ensbey of Warwick leading the way with a try early in the second half.

Chris Borrell, Jack Dring, and Thomas Barry quickly followed suit with a rapid succession of tries which were converted by Ben Forbes.

A second try to Morahan, converted by Hogan, brought some respectability to the score after Leo's had the match well won.

“It may be because they are Queensland country boys, but they are very tough, they are very committed and they do whatever gets asked of them at training," said Leo’s coach, Br Bob Wallace, who is also the president of Australian Schoolboys Rugby.
